Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) is an academic institute of national importance as recognised by a 1959 act of the Indian parliament. It was established in 1931, this is a public university of India and one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions focused on statistics, and its early reputation led it to being adopted as a model for the first US institute of Statistics set up at the Research Triangle, North Carolina by Gertrude Mary Cox.
The institute has promoted the interaction of Statistics with natural and social sciences to advance the role of Statistics, its general applicability and its dependence on other disciplines for its own development. In institute Research in Statistics and related disciplines is the primary activity of the Institute and now it is considered as one of the foremost centres in the world for training and research in Computer science, Statistics and related sciences
The main office of ISI is located Kolkata. Additionally, there are four centres located in Chennai, Delhi, Bangalore and Tezpur. Teaching activities are undertaken mainly in Kolkata, Delhi and Bangalore. Offices of the Institute located in several other cities in India.
For the admission in all degree courses students are required to go through written admission tests and interviews. ISI conducts the written tests at various examination centres across India. Applicants of M.Tech Computer Science should have a GATE score above a threshold. Also, candidates of research fellowship programmes who have already qualified for a fellowship from CSIR or NBHM, can directly appear in an interview
Traditionally, ISI offers fewer programs and admits fewer students than other degree granting academic institutions. With the empowerment of granting degrees in the subject of Statistics as per the ISI Act 1959, in 1960, ISI started bachelor level degree program Bachelor of Statistics and master level degree course Master of Statistics, and also began research level degrees such as PhD and DSc.

Indian Statistical Institute Fee structure: The course has no fees. In fact, all admitted candidates get stipend of Rs. 3000/- per month and contingency grant of Rs 3000/- per annum.
