University of Calcutta is a public university based in Kolkata, established in 1857 under the Calcutta University Act on 24th January. It was the first institute in Asia which was established as a multidisciplinary and secular university organized in western style. In India it is recognized as Centre with Potential for Excellence and Five Star University by National Assessment and Accrediation Council. The land for the establishment of this university was given by Maharaja of Darbhanga, Maharaja Maheshwar Singh Bahadur.
The university has a total number of 14 campuses all over the city of Kolkata and its suburbs. The main campuses are the
- Central Campus (Ashutosh Shiksha Prangan) inCollege Street,
- Taraknath Palit Shiksha Prangan in Ballygunge
- Rashbehari Shiksha Prangan in Rajabazar,
- Sahid Khudiram Siksha Pranganin Alipore.
Other campuses include the the Dhakuria Lakes (University Rowing Club), Hazra Road Campus, the B. T. Road Campus, the University Press and Book Depot, the Viharilal College of Home Science Campus, the University Health Service, the Haringhata Campus, and the University Ground and Tent at Maidan.
The university has total 18 research centres, 700 teachers, 3000 non-teaching staff, 11,500 post-graduate students and total 22000 students. Nearly 140 colleges are affiliated to the University.
